About the Program
Students in the Health Technology program learn critical nursing skills, including medical terminology, nursing procedures, restorative procedures and medical assisting. During year one, students are trained in basic first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Students also receive training in 25 basic nursing procedures on which they are tested in the spring of their first year in a public or private nursing facility. Those who pass all skill tests become State- Tested Nursing Assistants and are listed on the State of Ohio Registry. Students also learn basic dental assisting, including identifying and charting patient’s teeth, and cleaning and operating dental equipment.

Students in their second year are employed at area businesses, practicing the skills on which they have been tested. Each student is employed a minimum of fifteen hours per week (see ‘Externship Options’ for more information.)

Related instruction includes Diversified Health Occupations, which presents various careers and skill sets in the medical industry, such as Medical Assistant and Laboratory Assistant.

Length of Program: 2 Years

Partnership With: Central Ohio Technical, College and University of Northwestern Ohio
Early Placement
If, during your junior year, you have maintained an acceptable GPA and attendance record, you may qualify for an early-placement work option during your senior year.

Placed in a job through this program, you will have the chance to practice the skills you have learned during your first year of study. Depending on your ability and interest, you might work as a nurses assistant in an area nursing facility, a pharmacy or dental office. This work experience will compose a large part of your final lab grade. Not only will you receive program credit, but you will also have the opportunity to build employability skills, garner trust and a positive work reference from your employer.
Further Education
Should you wish to further your education as many Career Center graduates do, you will find that the time you invested in the Health Careers program may earn you pre-approved college credit.

Because the program is certified with the Ohio College Tech Prep Consortium, you have the opportunity to earn up to eleven quarter-hour college credits toward any one of a number of associate degrees in the medical field at Zane State College.

Articulation agreements are also in place with other area colleges. Colleges with whom the Health Careers program articulates include Central Ohio Technical College and University of Northwestern Ohio. The exact credit available is dependent upon the grades you earned in the Health Careers program and the college you want to attend.

Whatever you decide to do once you complete the program, you will find that the time you invested in the Health Careers program at the Coshocton County Career Center was time well-spent.
Alumni Update
The training I received at the Career Center and the quality of instruction was very detailed and really prepared me to go into the workforce. Also, because we had so much hands-on experience, it taught us not to be afraid of what to expect on the job.
