American Government

American Government is a year-long course for any students who have not yet earned this required social studies credit.

Government class is designed to provide every student with the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to function as a participating citizen in our democratic society. During the year, students will learn about civics and citizenship skills, American diversity, the organization of our federal, state, and local governments, political action and activities, the justice system, taxes, economics, and public issues.
 
Assignments include video quizzes, reflective essays, map activities, poster activities, questions, vocabulary lists, worksheets, quizzes, tests,and exams. Class participation and discussion is expected.

Cultural Diversity - COTC

Cultural Diversity is an elective course offered to any students who need or want a social studies credit; however, it is not a substitute credit for the required courses of American History or American Government.

This class discusses the many dimensions of American society including the issues of race, ethnicity, prejudice, discrimination, immigration, and religion; and explores minority groups such as Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, Muslim Americans, Jewish Americans, Women, Gays and Lesbians, the Aged, and the Disabled.
 
Cultural Diversity is a college credit plus class worth both a high school social studies credit and three semester hours of college credit from COTC. Assignments include video quizzes, reflective essays, questions, vocabulary lists, worksheets, and exams. Class participation, debate, and discourse is expected.

Miss Overholt
Social Studies Instructor

Miss Karen Overholt has been employed by the Coshocton County Career Center since August 1992. She has taught various Social Studies subjects during her tenure, including Government, COTC-Cultural Diversity, COTC-U.S. History, Sociology, World Studies, American History, and OGT Social Studies Intervention.
 
Miss Overholt is a 1986 graduate of Fredericktown High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Bluffton College in 1990. In 2002, she earned a Master of Social Sciences degree from Ohio University. She holds a High School 7-12 Comprehensive Social Studies teaching certificate from the Ohio Department of Education.
 
Miss Overholt has twice been recognized as the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year for Coshocton County. She received the honor in 2000 and 2001.
 
In addition to teaching, Miss Overholt has served as Student Council Advisor at the Career Center since 1993.
