About the Club

Begun as a vision in 1984, through the leadership of staff members at the H.B. Swofford Career Center in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, National Technical Honor Society has become the premier leader in honoring student achievement and leadership in career and technical education at the secondary and post-secondary level

In 2003, the National Board of Directors unanimously agreed to change the name of the organization from the National Vocational-Technical Honor Society to the National Technical Honor Society.

Thousands of schools and colleges throughout the U.S. and its territories now have a chapter of the honor society on their campus. These member schools agree that NTHS encourages higher scholastic achievement, cultivates a desire for personal excellence, and helps top students find success in today’s highly competitive workplace.

NTHS continues to carry out its mission to honor student achievement and leadership, promote educational excellence, and enhance career opportunities for the NTHS membership. NTHS encourages excellence by keeping academic and ethical standards high for initiates.

In addition to providing recognition to students who excel academically and through their leadership activities, NTHS awards an increasing number of scholarships each year to its members.

Being an NTHS inductee is one of the highest honors a student can achieve at the Career Center. Requirements for membership in the society are rigid. In addition to high GPA requirements, students must maintain an attendance record of 93% or better and must have passed all sections of the Ohio Graduation Test.

Students who meet the requirements may complete an application for membership at the beginning of their second semester as a junior. The application requires two letters of recommendation as well as a short essay describing the applicant’s leadership and community services interests and activities.

After Career Center instructors and staff rank applicants in the areas of leadership, character and citizenship/service, those applicants scoring highest against a point-based scoring system used by the National Technical Honor Society, are invited to become members in a surprise ‘tapping’ ceremony each spring.

The co-advisors of NTHS are Mrs. Pat Talbot and Mrs. Angie Smoulder, both English instructors at the Career Center.
