Building Trades program ambassador, Braxton Hillegass (River View) from the Coshocton County Career Center reads a book entitled Carpentry – part of the Community Helpers at Work series, to eager Kindergartners at Central Elementary school. The visit is part of the Career Center’s county-wide career-exploration program, available to all elementary schools in the county. Activities are typically targeted at Kindergarten, second, fourth and sixth-grade students.

Earlier this morning, Central Elementary School’s kindergartners got the change to explore what tools are used in a construction job, and to learn about the responsibilities of workers in this industry, including what they do, with whom they work and what they must wear to perform their jobs.

Career Center Building Trades program ambassador Braxton Hillegass (River View) visited with approximately 75 of the youngsters, through an activity called Kindergarten Reading Buddies. The activity is part of the Career Center’s out-bound career-readiness program designed to assist elementary and middle school aged children explore careers – both those offered by the Career Center and others that are not. In the program, age-appropriate activities are frequently joined with hands-on activities to bring a dose of reality to the learning activity.

Hillegass also let the students see various tools in his tool belt and showed them apparel worn to keep workers safe. The students got to ask questions and share stories about experiences they had with family members’ building projects. Each student received a pack of crayons and a bookmark to color.
